Stretchmarks before and after microneedling

How it works

By creating tiny pinhole injuries in the stretch mark itself, Dermapen microneedling improves its colour and appearance. These micro-punctures produce a controlled skin injury without actually damaging the epidermis.

The micro-injuries lead to minimal superficial bleeding and set up a wound healing cascade by releasing various growth factors. The latter comprise platelet-derived growth factors, connective tissue activating protein, connective tissue growth factor and fibroblast growth factor.

The needles also break down the old hardened scar strands and allow it to revascularise. Then, when the skin produces new collagen, the broken dermal layer is filled. As the dermal layer expands, the colour fades because the skin thickens and the blood vessels that give early stretch marks their pinkish-purple colour, retreat.

The treatment

Prior to the treatment, we explain the expected outcomes, delayed response and possible need for multiple treatments. Thereafter, we apply topical anaesthesia and then start the treatment 45 minutes later.

There’s no downtime. However, please bear in mind that the final results cannot be viewed immediately. Reason being that new collagen forms continually for approximately 3 – 6 months after treatment has ceased.
