Correct tattoo or permanent makeup mistakes

by lasermed2019

Whether you had permanent lipliner, permanent eyebrow tattoo, or permanent eyeliner done at some stage, do these now look less attractive than you imagined? Or has it lost its appeal? No need to fret, because at Lasermed we use the gold-standard Q Switched ND:YAG to remove undesirable tattoos effectively without scar formation or pigmentary changes.

Alta van der Merwe explains, “Tattoo removal results vary from person to person, depending on the tattoo’s colour(s), age and whether amateur or professional. But these days, we can remove tattoo ink with fewer treatments and treat ink colours that were once difficult to remove.”

There’s actually a lot to consider before removing a tattoo. This includes: how long you’ve had the tattoo; how deeply the ink penetrates your skin; the colours in your tattoo; where the tattoo appears on your body/face; your health; the medicines you take; and if you’ve ever had a raised scar.

A consultation about tattoo removal can be helpful for you too. It gives you an opportunity to ask questions, plus can see before-and-after photos of other tattoo removals. Lasermed offers you a free consultation.

Alta continues, “When you get a tattoo, the tattoo artist layers the ink. A laser cannot safely break down all the layers in one treatment session. Time between treatments is also necessary for your health. Your skin needs time to heal. After laser tattoo removal, you may see some redness, swelling, and a little blistering. Your body also needs time to flush out the ink.”

“When the laser’s light hits the ink, the light shatters the ink into tiny particles. Your body must flush out these tiny particles.”

After each treatment, your tattoo should lighten. Keep all your appointments for laser tattoo removal because each treatment removes more ink.

Alta warns, “It’s also important to follow our at-home care instructions after a laser tattoo removal session. Apply Bactroban ointment for a few days. Slathering on moisturiser and covering the area until the skin heals are also important. And importantly, use sunscreen liberally and wear clothing that covers the area. If the tattoo removal took place on your face, wear a hat.”

The lowdown on skin tightening

by lasermed2019

When you’re born, your skin is rich with proteins called elastin and collagen. These proteins give your skin structure and elasticity. As you age, your body’s production of these proteins slows down. As a result, your skin starts to lose its elasticity.

Thanks to gravity, pollution exposure, stress, and the hundreds of movements that your facial muscles make every day, your skin might start to appear stretched or saggy. Other factors, such as pregnancy and weight loss, can also contribute to stretch marks and sagging skin.

Additionally, as you age, your body’s supply of hyaluronic acid. At the same time, your ligaments, which provide the support structure that keeps these building blocks in place, start to weaken, resulting in thinner, saggy looking skin.

It’s important to understand the ageing process and how different our bodies are because this influences what will be effective for you and why your results may differ from someone else’s.

Nonsurgical skin tightening treatments target areas of your skin that have become loose and stimulate collagen production underneath that skin.

At Lasermed, we use ultrasound energy in a device called Utims Mini for skin tightening. This safely tightens and lifts muscle, as well as stimulating collagen production – perfect for heavy eyelids, nasolabial folds, loss of jawline definition and sagging of the neck and chin. Within three months you’ll notice an improvement, but best results for skin tightening are seen nine months later.

It’s suitable for men and women between ages 45 and 55 with mild to moderate skin laxity.

This skin tightening procedure doesn’t replace surgery, but is a good alternative for someone not ready for surgery. Essentially a skin tightening treatment is an investment in collagen.

Down and out with an oily skin & acne scarring?

by lasermed2019

An oily skin and/or superficial acne scarring can be the pits for sufferers. But these conditions needn’t be forever.

Microdermabrasion (MDA) not only provides a fresher skin, but is also particularly effective in removing blackheads and reducing pore size – on the face, chest, back and neck.

MDA is a safe and effective treatment to exfoliate the skin, stimulate blood circulation and lymph drainage. This allows the skin to function properly, speeding up the healing and repairing process.

With a low risk and rapid recovery, MDA is a painless, machine-assisted skin-exfoliating treatment. But because human skin typically regenerates at 30-day intervals, multiple treatments for an oily skin and superficial acne scarring in combination with sunscreen, sun avoidance and good skincare creams yield best results.

Are enlarged pores getting you down?

by lasermed2019

Depending on skin type, a person’s pores may be more or less noticeable. There are two types of pores: one releases the body’s natural oil, called sebum, and the other releases sweat. And it’s the oil-releasing pores which may appear enlarged.

Lasermed offers several treatments to help reduce the pore size appearance. These include chemical peels, microdermabrasion, Dermapen needling and the fractional resurfacing laser.

Gentle chemical peels really improve pores and problem skin. And then to help build up the collagen, we use microdermabrasion and fraxel laser resurfacing therapy. Book your free consultation!

Protect your skin with a good sunscreen

by lasermed2019

Now that summer has hit with a bang, we’ll definitely be exposed to more sun. The warmth is great, but beware: in later years, you’ll forever regret exposing your skin to the UV light without sunscreen.

Sunscreen blocks and absorbs UV rays through a combination of physical and chemical particles. Physical particles, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are used to reflect UV radiation from the skin. At the same time, complex chemical ingredients in sunscreen react with radiation before it penetrates the skin, absorbing the rays and releasing the energy as heat.

UVB radiation is the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer. But UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin. And recent research has confirmed that UVA rays also play a significant role in developing skin cancer.

Now that UVA dangers are well known, broad-spectrum sunscreens provide clear information on product labels about protection against both UVB and UVA.

Another factor to consider in sunscreen is the sun protection factor, or SPF. This refers to how much longer it takes for UVB rays to redden the skin with sunscreen compared to without sunscreen. For example, an SPF of 50 means it will take 50 times longer for skin to burn while using the product compared to without the product.

So, look for a sunscreen that offers both UVA and UVB protection with an SPF of 50 or higher. And if you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a water-resistant sunscreen is essential. Unfortunately, no sunscreen is waterproof; they all eventually wash off. Sunscreens labelled water-resistant are tested to be effective for up to 40 minutes of swimming.

Sunscreen should be applied every single day – about 30 minutes before venturing outside. Reapply every two hours and immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

Lasermed stocks an extensive range of sunscreens.
